Gene Key 14 and Gate 14: Compromise, Competence, Bounteousness
The body's working power. Gene Key 14 is Human Design's Gate of Power Skills and I Ching hexagram 14, Possession in Great Measure.
Gene Key 14 is the body's working power and the choice of where it goes. For anyone who carries 14, the key keeps a ledger open. Did today's best hours go to work you chose, or to work you settled for?
Richard Rudd's Gene Keys read 14 as a band that runs from Compromise at the low end, through Competence, to Bounteousness at the top. In Human Design it is the one Sacral gate wired straight to Gate 2, the G center's sense of direction.
Gene Key 14 at a glance
- Gene Keys: Compromise (shadow), Competence (gift), Bounteousness (siddhi)
- Human Design: Gate 14, the Gate of Power Skills, in the Sacral center
- Channel: 2-14, The Beat, joining the Sacral to the G center
- I Ching: hexagram 14, Possession in Great Measure (Fire over Heaven)
- Programming partner: Gene Key 8: Mediocrity, Style, Exquisiteness
- Codon ring: the Ring of Fire, which 14 shares with Gene Key 1
- On the wheel: 24°30' Scorpio to 0°07' Sagittarius. The Sun crosses it in the third week of November.
The band runs from Compromise to Bounteousness
Think of 14 as a range of settings on one supply of power. Anyone who carries it stands somewhere on the range today, and the setting can change between morning and evening. The size of the supply stays the same throughout.
Compromise: power paid to the wrong load
Start with what is good here. Anyone who carries 14 holds a real reserve of working power. It is the capacity to keep at a task long after the reason for starting has gone quiet. It sits low in the belly and shows as stamina more than as drive.
Compromise is a routing decision. The power goes to work picked for safety, for approval, or for a steady figure on a payslip. The body keeps supplying it, because supplying is what this power does. Nothing breaks and the output arrives on time. What drops is the charge: by mid-afternoon the reserve reads empty, and a weekend refills it only as far as Tuesday.
The loop holds because it pays. Each settled week buys some security, and the security makes the next settlement look sensible. The cost never arrives as a bill. It arrives as a flatness you stop noticing.
Compromise is power paid out to work the body never agreed to.
The shadow has two common shapes. In one, the person stays small: a role far below their capacity, kept because leaving would mean standing alone with a choice.
In the other, the person goes big. Sixty-hour weeks go into work they do not love, as if enough output could turn the wrong job into the right one. The first form starves the reserve and the second burns through it. Both leave skill growing in a direction nobody chose.
Competence: power that builds where it is spent
Higher on the band the supply is unchanged. What changes is the load it is routed to. Competence is power spent on work the body says yes to. Skill accumulates as a side effect of hours that did not have to be forced.
The gift is active. It shows as afternoons that pass unnoticed, a problem you return to without being asked, a craft that improves because you keep touching it. Collaborators and money gather around work done this way, because others can rely on it.
Competence asks for one discipline. The body registers a yes or a no before the mind has priced the offer. The gift lets the first signal decide where the power goes. The mind then works out the terms.
Bounteousness: where the band points
Rudd places Bounteousness at the top of this band: a plenty that does not stop at the person generating it. We name it and leave it there, with one pointer past the map. The power you keep routing was never in short supply, and the only scarce thing was ever the routing.
Gate 14 in Human Design is the Gate of Power Skills
In Human Design, 14 is a gate in the Sacral center. The Sacral generates life force and the energy for work. Ra Uru Hu named this gate the Gate of Power Skills. It holds the body's material resources, the fuel that makes long work possible.
Gate 14 is half of Channel 2-14, The Beat. The other half is Gate 2 in the G center, the Gate of the Direction of the Self, which the Gene Keys read as Gene Key 2.
A chart with both gates has its power wired to a heading, so the fuel knows where it is going. A chart with 14 alone has the fuel and no fixed heading of its own. It runs well near people and projects that supply a direction, and it wanders when it tries to invent one in a vacuum.
Know this before judging the shadow. Much of what reads as Compromise in a chart with 14 alone is power waiting for a heading it was never built to generate.
Hexagram 14 in the I Ching is Possession in Great Measure
The I Ching draws hexagram 14 as Fire over Heaven. Richard Wilhelm's translation names it Possession in Great Measure. Its counsel concerns large holdings: they stay sound when they are kept in plain view and used for something beyond their owner.
Beside the Gene Key, it shows the same resource at full size. Compromise keeps it in a safe drawer, and the hexagram asks for it in daylight. The History of the I Ching traces how the hexagrams became gates and keys.
Gene Key 14's programming partner is Gene Key 8
Every key has a programming partner, the key directly across the wheel. For 14 that is Gene Key 8, which runs from Mediocrity through Style to Exquisiteness.
The two are tied by the sky. When the Sun stands in Gate 14, the Earth stands in Gate 8. So any profile with 14 as its Life's Work has 8 as its Evolution.
14 is the fuel and 8 is the signature the fuel writes with. At the low end each props up the other's fear: power spent on safe work funds a contribution sanded down to fit in. Higher up, Competence gives Style the hours it needs to land, and Style gives Competence something only this person could have made.
Where 14 sits in your chart changes the read
All of the above holds for anyone who carries 14, wherever it falls. The rest depends on the chart.
A Gene Keys profile has three sequences, and 14 can land in any of them:
- The Activation Sequence covers purpose and outward work.
- The Venus Sequence covers love and the patterns learned early.
- The Pearl Sequence covers money and service.
Each placement also falls on one of six lines, written 14.1 to 14.6, and the line sets the style.

Questions about Gene Key 14
What is Gene Key 14?
Gene Key 14 is one of the 64 keys in Richard Rudd's Gene Keys. It describes the body's working power and the choice of where to spend it. Its shadow is Compromise, its gift is Competence and its siddhi is Bounteousness. Human Design's Gate 14 and I Ching hexagram 14 share its number.
What does Gate 14 mean in Human Design?
Gate 14 is the Gate of Power Skills, in the Sacral center. It holds the material resources and staying power that long work runs on. Joined with Gate 2 in the G center it forms Channel 2-14, The Beat, which ties the power to a sense of direction.
Is Gate 14 the same as Gene Key 14?
Both name the same position on one wheel, computed from the same birth data. Human Design treats it as mechanics: a gate in the Sacral, with one channel to the G center. The Gene Keys treat it as a band, running from Compromise through Competence to Bounteousness.
What are the shadow, gift and siddhi of Gene Key 14?
The shadow is Compromise: working power spent on work chosen for safety or approval. The gift is Competence: the same power spent where the body says yes, building skill as it goes. The siddhi is Bounteousness, the top of the band, where the plenty reaches past the person.
How do I know if Gene Key 14 is in my profile?
Your profile is calculated from the date, time and place you were born. Every planet's position lands in one of the 64 keys. The free map runs the calculation and lists each key you carry, with its sphere and line.
Run the load test today
Keep one sheet of paper beside you through a working day.
Each time you finish a block of work, write down what it was. Score your energy from 1 to 5 right then, before the next block starts.
When the day ends, circle the block that dropped you furthest and the one that left you higher than you began.
Read the two circles side by side. The low one is where your power is paid out to a load you settled for. The high one is where it builds skill. Write one sentence under them naming what the high block has that the low one lacks, and keep the sheet where you will see it tomorrow.
See where this sits in your own chart.
