The Gene Keys: 64 Keys, Three Frequencies, and How Your Profile Is Computed

The Gene Keys are a system of 64 archetypes that Richard Rudd published in 2009. Each key is one of the 64 hexagrams of the I Ching, placed on the wheel that Human Design uses. Each is read at three frequencies: a shadow, a gift and a siddhi.

Your profile is the set of keys the planets occupied at your birth and about three months before it. You work with a key by watching its shadow in your own week until the gift under it becomes usable.

The Gene Keys come from the I Ching by way of Human Design

Three layers sit under this system, and each one kept the count of 64.

The I Ching is about three thousand years old and builds its 64 hexagrams from six lines, each one solid or broken. Six binary choices give 64 figures, and each figure names one way a situation moves.

In 1987, on Ibiza, Ra Uru Hu produced Human Design and laid the 64 hexagrams around the zodiac as 64 gates of 5.625° each. A planet's position at your birth lands in one gate, on one of its six lines.

Richard Rudd studied and taught Human Design, and wrote manuals on it in the early 2000s. In 2009 he published The Gene Keys. He kept the wheel, the numbers and the lines, and he changed the question. Human Design asks how you are built, and the Gene Keys ask how far up each band you are living.

The name comes from a count. The genetic code has 64 codons, since three positions with four possible letters give 64 combinations. Rudd pairs each key with a codon group and sorts the keys into families he calls codon rings.

Whether that match is more than arithmetic is a debate this page sets aside. You can test a key without settling it: read the shadow, then check it against your week.

The three bodies of work have separate authors and owners. SuperMap computes from their shared structure and is affiliated with none of them. The History of the I Ching tells the longer story, and Rereading Rudd's "Gene Keys" reviews the book itself.

Each key runs at three frequencies: shadow, gift, siddhi

A key is one signal. The frequency is how much noise sits on it.

  • Shadow. The key running on fear, mostly unnoticed. Rudd gives each shadow two faces: one that turns the energy inward and one that throws it outward.
  • Gift. The same energy, usable. A gift is specific. Some are active, some are receptive, and none means "do more".
  • Siddhi. The tradition's name for the top of the band, where the pattern stops being personal. It is rare, and this site marks it without performing it.

In Gene Key 63 the shadow is Doubt, the gift is Inquiry and the siddhi is Truth. Doubt and Inquiry are the same questioning mind. In the shadow it circles and corrodes, and in the gift it is pointed at something that can be answered.

No key is a verdict. You carry a set of bands, and on a given day you stand somewhere on each. The work is noticing where.

A profile arranges your keys into three sequences

A profile places your keys in named positions called spheres. The spheres run in three sequences, and together they form what Rudd calls the Golden Path.

  • The Activation Sequence: Life's Work, Evolution, Radiance, Purpose. What you are here to do, and what it costs you to do it.
  • The Venus Sequence: Attraction, IQ, EQ, SQ, Core. The patterns you bring into relationships, traced back to where they formed.
  • The Pearl Sequence: Vocation, Culture, Brand, Pearl. How you work, who you work with and how you prosper.

Each sphere holds a key and a line, written as two numbers. A Life's Work of 41.6 means Gene Key 41 on line 6. The key says what the band is, and the line, one of six, says in what style you meet it.

A Gene Keys profile is computed from two moments

The first moment is your birth. The second is the moment the Sun stood 88° behind its birth position, about three months earlier. Human Design calls the two the Personality and the Design.

At each moment, every planet sits at one degree of the zodiac. That degree falls in one of 64 segments of 5.625°, and in one of the six lines inside it. A sphere is one named planet at one named moment:

  • Life's Work: the Sun at birth
  • Evolution: the Earth at birth, the point opposite the Sun
  • Radiance: the Sun at the earlier moment
  • Purpose: the Earth at the earlier moment
  • Attraction: the Moon at the earlier moment
  • IQ: Venus at birth
  • EQ: Mars at birth
  • SQ: Venus at the earlier moment
  • Core: Mars at the earlier moment
  • Culture: Jupiter at the earlier moment
  • Pearl: Jupiter at birth
  • Brand: the same key as your Life's Work, met again at the end of the path

Two things follow from that list. Your Life's Work key has the same number as your Human Design Personality Sun gate, and your four Activation spheres are the four gates of your Incarnation Cross.

The Gene Keys call this chart a Hologenetic Profile. SuperMap computes it free from one birth entry, beside your Human Design chart and your Western and Vedic charts. The planet positions are checked against NASA's JPL Horizons data.

You work a key by watching its shadow in your week

Rudd's word for the method is contemplation: returning to one key over weeks until you catch its shadow live. In practice it is four moves.

Start with one key. Your Life's Work is the usual first choice, since it colors what you do every day.

Read the shadow before the gift. Reaching for the gift first skips the part that changes anything.

Catch it with a time and a place. "I do this sometimes" is too wide to work with. "Tuesday, in the planning meeting, I did it again" is a catch.

Read its programming partner. Every key has one: the key opposite it on the wheel. The two shadows feed each other, so the second page often explains the first.

Working a Shadow lays the practice out step by step. Each of the 64 pages below ends with a test built for that key.

Gene Keys and Human Design read one chart for two purposes

Both systems start from the same birth data, the same wheel and the same 64 numbers. Gate 41 and Gene Key 41 are one position.

Human Design reads that position as mechanics: which center the gate sits in, whether it completes a channel, and what that means for how you decide. Its output is a strategy and an authority.

The Gene Keys read the position as a band. Their output is a contemplation: where on this range you are living, and what the next step up looks like.

The names do not always line up, and that trips people. Human Design calls Gate 63 the Gate of Doubt. In the Gene Keys, Doubt is the shadow of Key 63. The word is neutral in one system and the low end in the other. Each of the 64 pages gives both names, and nine of them carry a note on a word that trips readers this way.

Use both. Human Design tells you how to decide this week, and the Gene Keys tell you what you are practicing while you do.

The siddhi is the map pointing past itself

Every band on this site ends in a word like Truth, Silence or Emanation. Those words describe a state in which the pattern is no longer about you.

Read that as a direction. A map of 64 patterns is useful for seeing what you do, and it stops being useful once you take the patterns for who you are. The keys describe weather you move through. What notices the weather is outside the forecast.

So hold the profile lightly. Work the shadow in front of you this week, and let the top of the band stay a pointer.

Questions about the Gene Keys

What are the Gene Keys?

The Gene Keys are 64 archetypes published by Richard Rudd in 2009. Each key matches one I Ching hexagram and one Human Design gate. Each is read as a band with three points, a shadow, a gift and a siddhi, and a profile shows which keys you carry.

Who created the Gene Keys?

Richard Rudd, an English teacher and writer who came through Human Design. His reference book is The Gene Keys. Genius, Love and Prosperity guide the three sequences, and The 64 Ways gives a short contemplation for each key.

Are the Gene Keys the same as Human Design?

They share one chart: the same birth data, wheel and 64 numbers. Human Design reads each position as mechanics and gives you a way to decide. The Gene Keys read it as a band from shadow to siddhi and give you something to contemplate.

How do I get my Gene Keys profile?

A profile is calculated from your birth date, time and place. SuperMap's free map computes your spheres with the key and line for each. The birth time matters, because some planets change line within hours.

What is the Golden Path?

The Golden Path is Rudd's name for the three sequences walked in order: Activation, then Venus, then Pearl. It moves from what you do, through how you relate, to how you prosper.

Which Gene Keys book should I read first?

Start with your own profile and the chapters of The Gene Keys for your four Activation spheres. Genius then walks that sequence step by step. Reading the reference book cover to cover is the slow way in.

Start with one key this week

Compute your free map and find your Life's Work, the key where the Sun stood when you were born.

Open that key's page from the list above and read the shadow section first.

Then run the test at the bottom of that page before the week ends. One key, one week, one catch with a time and a place on it.
