Gene Key 35 and Gate 35: Hunger, Adventure, Boundlessness

The appetite for change. Gene Key 35 is Human Design's Gate of Change and I Ching hexagram 35, Progress.

The range, low to high
ShadowHunger. The next experience loading before this one is lived.
GiftAdventure. Each experience entered fully, finished and passed on.
SiddhiBoundlessness. No edge left to reach toward.

Gene Key 35 is the appetite for change: the next place, the next skill, the next experience. For anyone who carries 35, the key asks about the last new thing you tried. Were you still inside it when it ended?

Richard Rudd's Gene Keys read 35 as a band that runs from Hunger at the low end, through Adventure, to Boundlessness at the top. It is the only key in the Ring of Miracles, a codon ring it holds alone.

Gene Key 35 at a glance

  • Gene Keys: Hunger (shadow), Adventure (gift), Boundlessness (siddhi)
  • Human Design: Gate 35, the Gate of Change, in the Throat center
  • Channel: 35-36, Transitoriness, joining the Throat to the Solar Plexus
  • I Ching: hexagram 35, Progress (Fire over Earth)
  • Programming partner: Gene Key 5: Impatience, Patience, Timelessness
  • Codon ring: the Ring of Miracles, which 35 holds alone
  • On the wheel: 11°22' to 17°00' of Gemini. The Sun crosses it in the first week of June.

The band runs from Hunger to Boundlessness

This key is a range of presence inside new experience. Anyone who carries 35 lands somewhere on it with each trip, course or meeting, and the landing can change from one week to the next. The appetite for the new is equally strong at every point.

Hunger: the infinite scroll

The appetite deserves respect. Anyone who carries 35 wants to try things, go places and meet the people, and that wanting moves a life forward. It also gives a person something to say. Much of what anyone knows about which experiences are worth having comes from people like this.

Hunger is what happens when the appetite runs ahead of the experience. The trip is booked and the mind is already planning the next one. The course starts, and by the third lesson another course looks better. Each experience is half lived, so none of them fills you, so the next one has to promise more. The appetite grows on what it never finishes eating.

Hunger is an infinite scroll: the next experience loads before this one has been read.

The shadow has two shapes. The first collects. There is a long list of places, hobbies and half-finished programs, and each one was dropped the day it stopped being new.

The second shrugs. It has had enough disappointing experiences to decide nothing new is worth the effort, and it keeps the appetite on a short leash and calls that maturity. Collecting and shrugging both keep the appetite from ever being met.

Adventure: one thing, all the way through

Higher on the band the appetite is unchanged. Adventure stays inside each experience until it is actually over, and then tells someone about it.

The gift is active. It shows as the trip where the phone stays in the bag and the skill learned past its awkward middle. It shows in the story told afterward, full of details only someone who was really there would know. Because each experience lands, fewer of them are needed, and one month of it can hold more than a year of collecting. People around someone working from this place get the benefit, since what they hear about is worth trying.

Adventure keeps moving. It just finishes before it moves.

Boundlessness: where the band points

Rudd places Boundlessness at the top of this band, a state with no edge left to reach toward, because nothing is felt as missing. We name it and stop there, with one pointer past the map. The edge you keep traveling toward moves with you.

Gate 35 in Human Design is the Gate of Change

The Human Design chart places 35 in the Throat, the center where energy turns into speech and action. Ra Uru Hu named it the Gate of Change. It carries the drive toward progress through new experience, and the urge to talk about what was learned along the way.

Gate 35 is half of Channel 35-36, Transitoriness. The other half is Gate 36 in the Solar Plexus, the Gate of Crisis, which the Gene Keys read as Gene Key 36. A chart with both gates has the appetite and the emotional depth in one circuit. It goes through experiences fully, crisis included, and comes out with something to say.

A chart with 35 alone has the appetite and the voice without the emotional depth wired behind it. It can skim, moving on before an experience has touched it. Its experiences often land harder when someone carrying 36 is along, bringing the feeling it does not generate alone.

Hexagram 35 in the I Ching is Progress

The I Ching draws hexagram 35 as Fire over Earth. Richard Wilhelm's translation names it Progress. Its counsel concerns rising: advancement comes easily when it happens in plain view and serves more than the one advancing.

Read beside the Gene Key, the hexagram measures progress by what it brightens. Adventure moves forward in the same way, by experiences that leave something behind. The History of the I Ching traces how the hexagrams became gates and keys.

Gene Key 35's programming partner is Gene Key 5

A programming partner is the key opposite on the wheel. For 35 that is Gene Key 5, which runs from Impatience through Patience to Timelessness.

They are linked through the sky. With the Sun in Gate 35, the Earth sits in Gate 5. So a profile with 35 as its Life's Work has 5 as its Evolution.

35 wants the next experience and 5 keeps the rhythm. At the low end, the chase for something new breaks every routine, and without a routine nothing new gets fully digested. Higher up, Adventure gives Patience something worth waiting for, and Patience lets each adventure finish.

Where 35 sits in your chart changes the read

Everything on this page is true for anyone who carries 35. Past here, your chart decides the read.

A Gene Keys profile has three sequences, and 35 can land in any of them:

Each placement also falls on one of six lines, written 35.1 to 35.6, and the line sets the style.

Questions about Gene Key 35

What is Gene Key 35?

Gene Key 35 is one of the 64 keys in Richard Rudd's Gene Keys. It describes the appetite for change and for new experience. Its shadow is Hunger, its gift is Adventure and its siddhi is Boundlessness. It shares its number with Human Design's Gate 35 and I Ching hexagram 35.

What does Gate 35 mean in Human Design?

Gate 35 is the Gate of Change in the Throat center. It carries the drive toward progress through new experience and the urge to talk about it. With Gate 36 in the Solar Plexus it forms Channel 35-36, Transitoriness, which pairs the appetite with emotional depth.

Is Gate 35 the same as Gene Key 35?

Both describe one position on one wheel, computed from the same birth data. Human Design reads it as mechanics: a Throat gate with one channel to the Solar Plexus. The Gene Keys read it as a band from Hunger through Adventure to Boundlessness.

What are the shadow, gift and siddhi of Gene Key 35?

The shadow is Hunger: the next experience chased before this one is lived. The gift is Adventure: each experience entered fully, finished and passed on. The siddhi is Boundlessness, the top of the band, where there is no edge left to reach toward.

How do I know if Gene Key 35 is in my profile?

Your profile is calculated from the date, time and place of your birth. Every planet's position falls in one of the 64 keys at that moment. The free map computes yours and lists every key you carry, with its sphere and line.

Run the full-taste test today

Choose one experience you will have today: a meal, a walk somewhere new or a class.

Leave your phone in another room or in a bag for the whole of it, and do not plan anything else while it lasts.

Afterward, write down three details about it that nobody else present would have noticed.

Then send one person a two-line message telling them about it. Keep the note and the sent message together. They show what one experience gives you when it is allowed to finish.
