Gene Key 27 and Gate 27: Selfishness, Altruism, Selflessness

The drive to feed and protect. Gene Key 27 is Human Design's Gate of Caring and I Ching hexagram 27, The Corners of the Mouth.

The range, low to high
ShadowSelfishness. Care that runs through a meter and waits for its return.
GiftAltruism. Care sized to the need in front of you, with nothing owed back.
SiddhiSelflessness. Care with nobody left inside it to keep the count.

Gene Key 27 is the physical drive to feed and protect other lives. For anyone who carries 27, the key puts one question to each act of care. Who was it really for?

Richard Rudd's Gene Keys read 27 as a band: Selfishness at the low end, Altruism in the middle, Selflessness at the top. Its hexagram has firm lines only at the top and bottom with four open lines between, a shape the I Ching reads as an open mouth.

Gene Key 27 at a glance

  • Gene Keys: Selfishness (shadow), Altruism (gift), Selflessness (siddhi)
  • Human Design: Gate 27, the Gate of Caring, in the Sacral center
  • Channel: 27-50, Preservation, joining the Sacral to the Spleen
  • I Ching: hexagram 27, The Corners of the Mouth (Mountain over Thunder)
  • Programming partner: Gene Key 28: Purposelessness, Totality, Immortality
  • Codon ring: the Ring of Life and Death, one of its six keys
  • On the wheel: 2°00' to 7°37' of Taurus. The Sun crosses it in late April.

The band runs from Selfishness to Selflessness

Every key covers a range, and Gene Key 27 covers the whole distance between feeding yourself and feeding a world. Nobody lives at one point of it. On a given evening the same urge to cook for the house can sit low or high on the band.

Selfishness: care that runs through a meter

Begin with the drive itself, because it is one of the strongest in the body. It sits in the Sacral, the gut's engine room, and it moves before thought does. A child cries and the hands are already reaching.

Selfishness is what happens when that output gets metered. Each unit of care is logged as it leaves, and the log expects a reply: thanks, loyalty, a softer tone in the next argument. When no reply comes, the meter reads as debt. The caring keeps running, but now it runs on a balance sheet.

Care that keeps a ledger is a loan with a warm voice.

The meter can also point inward. Some people log nothing they give and everything they hold back, guarding a private store of time or money as if it might be the last.

Two forms show up often. In one, a person cooks for the whole household and eats standing at the counter, then feels a slow heat of resentment by the weekend. In the other, a past kindness surfaces in a quarrel months later, itemized and dated. Both are the same drive with a meter bolted on.

Altruism: care sized to the need

Move up the band and the drive is just as strong. What changes is where it takes its reading. Altruism measures the person in front of you and nothing else: what they lack today, how much of it you can supply, and when to stop.

The gift is relational. It needs another life to read, and it works best when it reads that life accurately. Sometimes that means giving less than you want to, because more would weaken the person receiving it. Sometimes it means feeding a stranger and forgetting the event by dinner.

People near you notice that your help arrives without a hook in it. They stop bracing when you offer.

Selflessness: where the band points

Rudd sets Selflessness at the top of this band: care that flows with no self standing in the middle of it to be thanked. We name it and leave it there, with one pointer. Notice the moment before you decide to help, when the need is simply seen and nobody is yet the helper.

Gate 27 in Human Design is the Gate of Caring

Human Design places Gate 27 in the Sacral center, the motor that keeps a body working through the day. Ra Uru Hu called it the Gate of Caring. Its energy is practical: feeding, sheltering, keeping a group alive through the winter.

Gate 27 is one end of Channel 27-50, Preservation. The other end is Gate 50 in the Spleen, the Gate of Values, which the Gene Keys read as Gene Key 50. A chart with both gates carries the drive to care and a built-in sense of which rules and values the caring should protect.

A chart with 27 alone has the drive and no fixed compass for it. It cares strongly, and it learns what is worth protecting from the people and situations it meets. That makes the choice of company a practical matter for anyone who carries this gate open at one end.

Hexagram 27 in the I Ching is The Corners of the Mouth

The oldest of the three maps draws this number as Mountain over Thunder. Richard Wilhelm's translation names it The Corners of the Mouth, with Providing Nourishment as its second name. Its counsel is to watch what goes into a mouth and what comes out of it, your own and the ones you feed.

Beside the Gene Key it reads as a check on both directions of care. The History of the I Ching traces how the 64 hexagrams became the 64 gates and keys.

Gene Key 27's programming partner is Gene Key 28

A programming partner is the key that sits directly across the wheel. For 27 it is Gene Key 28, which runs from Purposelessness through Totality to Immortality.

The Earth is always opposite the Sun. When the Sun stands in Gate 27, the Earth stands in Gate 28, so a profile with 27 as its Life's Work always has 28 as its Evolution.

The two keys split the work of survival. 27 keeps life going, and 28 asks what that life is for. At the low end they trap each other: care hoarded or traded on one side, a life with no reason to spend itself on the other. Higher up, 28 gives the caring a purpose worth serving, and 27 gives that purpose people to feed along the way.

Where 27 sits in your chart changes the read

Everything on this page so far holds for anyone who carries 27. The rest depends on a chart.

A Gene Keys profile has three sequences, and 27 can land in any of them:

Each placement also falls on one of six lines, written 27.1 to 27.6, and the line sets the style.

Questions about Gene Key 27

What is Gene Key 27?

Gene Key 27 is one of the 64 keys in Richard Rudd's Gene Keys. It describes the physical drive to feed and protect other lives. Its shadow is Selfishness, its gift is Altruism and its siddhi is Selflessness. It shares its number with Human Design's Gate 27 and I Ching hexagram 27.

What does Gate 27 mean in Human Design?

Gate 27 is the Gate of Caring in the Sacral center. It carries the energy to nourish, shelter and protect. With Gate 50 in the Spleen it forms Channel 27-50, Preservation, which joins the drive to care with a sense of which values the care should keep alive.

Is Gate 27 the same as Gene Key 27?

Both name the same slice of the same wheel, calculated from the same birth data. Human Design treats it as a mechanism with a center and a channel. The Gene Keys treat it as a band running from Selfishness to Altruism to Selflessness, with the carrier somewhere along it.

What are the shadow, gift and siddhi of Gene Key 27?

The shadow is Selfishness: care that is logged and expects a return, or held back in fear of running out. The gift is Altruism: care sized to what another person actually needs. The siddhi is Selflessness, the top of the band, where care moves with no one keeping count.

How do I know if Gene Key 27 is in my profile?

Your profile comes from your birth date, time and place. The position of each planet at that moment falls in one of the 64 keys. The free map calculates every key you carry and shows the sphere and line of each one.

Run the meter test today

Carry a small card or a note on your phone from the moment you wake.

Each time you give something today, write one line: what you gave and to whom. Food, a lift and an hour all count.

Before bed, read the list once. Put a mark beside every line where some part of you expects it to be noticed, repaid or remembered.

Count the marks against the total. The fraction is how much of today's care ran through the meter, and tomorrow's card will show whether it moved.
