Gene Key 15 and Gate 15: Dullness, Magnetism, Florescence
The full range of a rhythm. One number in three maps: Gene Key 15, Human Design's Gate of Extremes, and I Ching hexagram 15, Modesty.
Gene Key 15 is the full range of a person's rhythm, from very slow to very fast. For anyone who carries 15, the key asks a question about volume. How much of your range did today use?
Richard Rudd's Gene Keys read 15 as a band with three named points: Dullness at the low end, Magnetism in the middle, Florescence at the top. The June solstice falls inside Gate 15, so the Sun's yearly turn happens inside this gate.
Gene Key 15 at a glance
- Gene Keys: Dullness (shadow), Magnetism (gift), Florescence (siddhi)
- Human Design: Gate 15, the Gate of Extremes, in the G center
- Channel: 15-5, Rhythm, joining the G to the Sacral
- I Ching: hexagram 15, Modesty (Earth over Mountain)
- Programming partner: Gene Key 10: Self-Obsession, Naturalness, Being
- Codon ring: the Ring of Seeking, with keys 39, 52, 53, 54 and 58
- On the wheel: 28°15' of Gemini to 3°52' of Cancer. The Sun crosses it in the days around the June solstice.
The band runs from Dullness to Florescence
A key is a range. A single week can carry you from one end of it nearly to the other. Nobody is "a 15". You carry a wide rhythm, and today you are playing it at some volume.
Dullness: the compressor on
Begin with the range, because it is unusual. Anyone who carries 15 can be intensely busy for a stretch and then completely still for another, and both are natural. They tend to enjoy every sort of person, the quiet ones and the loud ones. Wide variety is their home ground.
Dullness is that range squeezed flat. Sound engineers use a compressor to pull the loud parts down and the quiet parts up until everything sits at one level. A little is useful. Too much, and every note arrives at the same volume, perfectly audible and strangely lifeless. A life can be compressed the same way: the same moderate pace, the same mild meals, the same safe hour of screen at night.
Dullness is a life run through a compressor: nothing too loud, nothing too quiet, nothing you would turn up.
It shows in two ways. In the first, the flat setting simply stays on. Days are pleasant and interchangeable, and when someone asks how the month went you cannot find a single moment to report. In the second, the flatness is fought with forced peaks. A sudden trip, a picked fight, a weekend project at full intensity, each one followed by a drop back to the same gray level.
Neither form uses the actual range. The first refuses the extremes, and the second fakes them.
Magnetism: the full range played
Move up the band and the range is unchanged. The compressor is off. Magnetism is what that range does in company. A person allowed to be very slow on some days and very fast on others can meet far more kinds of people where they already are.
The gift is relational. Nobody is pursued. Long silences and bursts of energy are both allowed, and that honesty about tempo works like a wide doorway.
A shy person can find you on a slow day. A restless one can find you on a fast day. Opportunities arrive through the same doorway, because you are available at more speeds than most.
People describe it as warmth. Mechanically, it is range.
Florescence: where the band points
Rudd places Florescence at the top of this band: a flowering of the whole person that no effort can schedule. We name it and step back, with one pointer for the reader who wants it. Nothing that has ever bloomed was told the date.
Gate 15 in Human Design is the Gate of Extremes
Human Design reads the same number as a gate in the G center, the center of identity, love and direction. Ra Uru Hu named it the Gate of Extremes. It carries a love of humanity in all its variety and a rhythm that does not stay at one speed.
Gate 15 is half of Channel 15-5, Rhythm. The other half is Gate 5, the Gate of Fixed Patterns, in the Sacral, which the Gene Keys read as Gene Key 5. A chart with both gates has range and habit wired together, a personal rhythm that is wide and still dependable.
A chart with Gate 15 alone has the range without a fixed daily pattern underneath it. It often borrows one: a partner's routine, an office's hours, a class at the same time each week. Its timing can shift noticeably with the company it keeps. That shift is part of the design, and no failure of discipline.
Hexagram 15 in the I Ching is Modesty
The oldest of the three maps draws this number as Earth over Mountain. Richard Wilhelm's translation names it Modesty. Its counsel is leveling: take from what is too high, add to what is too low, and the whole stays in balance.
Read beside the Gene Key, it adds a check on range: the extremes serve when they even out the room, and show off when they do not. The History of the I Ching covers how hexagrams turned into gates.
Gene Key 15's programming partner is Gene Key 10
A programming partner is the key across the wheel. For 15 that is Gene Key 10, which runs from Self-Obsession through Naturalness to Being.
The pair splits the two solstices: June in 15, December in 10. When the Sun stands in Gate 15, the Earth stands in Gate 10, so a profile with 15 as its Life's Work always has 10 as its Evolution.
At the low end the two shadows trade places. Flat days send attention inward looking for something worth watching, and constant self-watching makes the days flatter still. Higher up, Naturalness lets you behave without a commentary, and Magnetism gives that natural behavior its full range of speeds to move in.
Where 15 sits in your chart changes the read
Everything up to here holds for anyone who carries 15. From here on, the read depends on your chart.
A Gene Keys profile has three sequences, and 15 can land in any of them:
- The Activation Sequence covers purpose and outward work.
- The Venus Sequence covers love and the patterns learned early.
- The Pearl Sequence covers money and service.
Each placement also falls on one of six lines, written 15.1 to 15.6, and the line sets the style.
The calculation needs your birth date, time and place. Compute your free map to see if 15 is there.
Questions about Gene Key 15
What is Gene Key 15?
Gene Key 15 is one of the 64 keys in Richard Rudd's Gene Keys. It describes the full range of a person's rhythm and their love of human variety. Its shadow is Dullness, its gift is Magnetism and its siddhi is Florescence. The same number is Gate 15 in Human Design and hexagram 15 in the I Ching.
What does Gate 15 mean in Human Design?
Gate 15 is the Gate of Extremes in the G center. It carries a wide, changeable rhythm and an embrace of every kind of person. With Gate 5 in the Sacral it forms Channel 15-5, Rhythm, which pairs that range with a fixed daily pattern.
Is Gate 15 the same as Gene Key 15?
They name the same stretch of one wheel, computed from the same birth moment. Human Design reads its mechanics: center, channel, the gate at the other end. The Gene Keys read it as a band you move along, from Dullness to Magnetism to Florescence.
What are the shadow, gift and siddhi of Gene Key 15?
The shadow is Dullness: a life held at one middle speed. The gift is Magnetism: the whole range of tempo allowed, so many kinds of people can meet you. The siddhi is Florescence, the top of the band, a flowering that no effort can schedule.
How do I know if Gene Key 15 is in my profile?
The positions of the Sun, Moon and planets at your birth each land in one of 64 keys. The free map works them out from your birth date, time and place, and shows 15 with its sphere and line if it is in your chart.
Run the range test today
Pick two ordinary activities you will do anyway today.
Do the first at half your normal speed: a meal eaten slowly enough to taste each bite, or a ten-minute walk at a stroll.
Do the second at double your normal intensity: two minutes of all-out effort, a song sung at full voice, a room cleaned at a sprint.
Before you start and after each one, write a number from one to ten for how awake you feel.
Tonight, look at the three numbers in a row. If either extreme lifted the score, you have found some of the range the day had been leaving unused.
