Gene Key 31 and Gate 31: Arrogance, Leadership, Humility

The voice that moves a group. One number in three maps: Gene Key 31, Human Design's Gate of Influence, and I Ching hexagram 31, Influence.

The range, low to high
ShadowArrogance. The voice working to secure the credit.
GiftLeadership. Saying where the group already leans, when it can hear it.
SiddhiHumility. Influence with no one standing in the middle to collect it.

Gene Key 31 is the capacity to say a direction so a group moves with it. For anyone who carries 31, the key asks this. The last time you spoke up in a group, was it for the group or for the credit?

Richard Rudd's Gene Keys map 31 as a band: Arrogance at the low end, Leadership in the middle, Humility at the top. Gate 31 is where the Earth stands when the Human Design year begins, opposite the Sun in Gate 41.

Gene Key 31 at a glance

  • Gene Keys: Arrogance (shadow), Leadership (gift), Humility (siddhi)
  • Human Design: Gate 31, the Gate of Influence, in the Throat center
  • Channel: 31-7, The Alpha, joining the Throat to the G center
  • I Ching: hexagram 31, Influence (Lake over Mountain)
  • Programming partner: Gene Key 41: Fantasy, Anticipation, Emanation
  • Codon ring: the Ring of No Return, which 31 shares with Gene Key 62
  • On the wheel: 2°00' to 7°37' of Leo. The Sun crosses it in late July.

The band runs from Arrogance to Humility

A key is a range. Anyone who carries 31 moves along this one each time they open their mouth in company. The energy stays the same. What changes is who the words are working for.

Arrogance: the voice listening to itself

Start with what the energy is good for. Some people can name a direction in a way that makes others want to walk it. In the body it sits in the throat: a pressure to speak first, the sentence already formed before the pause arrives. Groups need that. Without someone willing to say where to go, a room circles.

Arrogance begins when the speaker watches the reaction more closely than the direction. Every sentence picks up a second job, which is to establish who said it. The return signal, a nod or a silence, becomes the point. Praise turns the volume up, so the next sentence has to be louder to earn the same return. Silence turns it up too.

Arrogance is a microphone turned toward its own speaker.

Sound engineers call that loop feedback. The system amplifies its own output until the room hears only the squeal, and the message is lost under it.

It has two forms, and they look like opposites. In the loud one, you keep score. You restate a colleague's idea a minute later in your own words, or correct a small point so the correction is on record.

In the quiet one, you hold the useful thing back until the room asks properly, or offer it wrapped in enough self-deprecation that someone has to insist. The quiet form passes for modesty. It runs the same loop and waits on the same return.

Leadership: saying where the group already leans

Higher on the band the throat pressure is unchanged, and the microphone points outward. Leadership is relational. It depends on listening long enough to hear where a group is already leaning, then saying it in one sentence everyone can act on.

Timing is half of it. The same sentence said too early lands as a lecture, and said on time it lands as a decision.

The gift also includes stepping back. Once the direction is spoken, it belongs to the group, and the speaker stops guarding it. People who work beside someone in this range rarely remember who proposed the plan. They remember the plan was clear.

Humility: where the band points

Rudd places Humility at the top of this band: influence with nobody standing at its center to collect it. We mark it and leave it there, with one pointer. The sentences that move a room most cleanly are the ones nobody planned, the speaker included.

Gate 31 in Human Design is the Gate of Influence

Human Design places the same number in the Throat, the center that turns energy into speech and action. Ra Uru Hu named it the Gate of Influence. It carries the voice that can say, on behalf of others, here is where we go.

Gate 31 is one end of Channel 31-7, The Alpha. The other end is Gate 7 in the G center, the Role of the Self in Interaction, which the Gene Keys read as Gene Key 7. The G center holds identity and direction.

A chart with both gates has the direction and the voice for it wired together. A chart with 31 alone has the voice, and it looks to other people for the direction it speaks for. So 31 alone does its best work as the spokesperson for a plan someone else found.

Hexagram 31 in the I Ching is Influence

The I Ching draws this number as Lake over Mountain. Richard Wilhelm's translation names it Influence. Its counsel is two-way influence: the steady party draws the other in by staying open to being moved in return.

Read beside the Gene Key, it warns against broadcasting without receiving. The History of the I Ching traces how the hexagrams became the gates and the keys.

Gene Key 31's programming partner is Gene Key 41

A programming partner sits on the far side of the wheel and completes the key. For 31 that is Gene Key 41: Fantasy, Anticipation, Emanation.

The Sun and the Earth are always 180 degrees apart, so when the Sun is in Gate 31 the Earth is in Gate 41. A profile with 31 as its Life's Work has 41 as its Evolution, without exception.

41 carries the pressure of something about to begin, and 31 carries the voice that can name it. At the low end each covers the other's gap: a grand picture, announced with confidence, with no step underneath it. Higher up, Anticipation hands the voice something true to say, and the voice gives a new beginning words other people can follow.

Where 31 sits in your chart changes the read

Everything on this page applies to anyone who carries 31, wherever it falls. The next layer is specific to you.

A Gene Keys profile has three sequences, and 31 can land in any of them:

Each placement also falls on one of six lines, written 31.1 to 31.6, and the line sets the style.

Questions about Gene Key 31

What is Gene Key 31?

Gene Key 31 is one of the 64 keys in Richard Rudd's Gene Keys. It covers the voice that moves a group, the urge to say where people should go. Its shadow is Arrogance, its gift is Leadership and its siddhi is Humility. It shares its number with Gate 31 and hexagram 31.

What does Gate 31 mean in Human Design?

Gate 31 is the Gate of Influence in the Throat center. It gives a voice that can speak for a group's direction. With Gate 7 in the G center it forms Channel 31-7, The Alpha. Without Gate 7, the voice looks to other people for the direction it speaks for.

Is Gate 31 the same as Gene Key 31?

They share one position on one wheel, calculated from the same birth data. Human Design treats it as a mechanic with a center and a channel. The Gene Keys treat it as a band you move along, from Arrogance through Leadership to Humility.

What are the shadow, gift and siddhi of Gene Key 31?

The shadow is Arrogance: the voice works to secure credit instead of moving the group. The gift is Leadership: saying where the group already leans, at the moment it can hear it. The siddhi is Humility, the top of the band, influence nobody claims.

How do I know if Gene Key 31 is in my profile?

Your profile is calculated from your birth date, time and place. Each planet falls in one of the 64 keys, and each key falls on one of six lines. The free map shows whether 31 is among yours, and in which sphere and line.

Run the unsigned idea test today

Pick one group you will speak in today: a meeting, a family dinner, a team thread.

When you have something useful to add, give it away. Ask it as a question that lets someone else reach it, or credit the person whose point it builds on. Do not reclaim it later.

Tonight, write two lines. First, did the idea move the group anyway? Second, what did your throat do when someone else got the credit?

If the idea moved and your throat stayed quiet, you spent the day on the Leadership side of the band. If the second line runs longer than the first, the microphone was still facing you.
